The villain was in every scene. The camera never once found him.
In 1987, a film technician named Alistair Crawford working freelance in Glasgow was hired onto a production he later described in a private notebook, recovered from a house clearance in Lanarkshire in 2012, as “the only job where I was given a shot list containing a character who was never on the call sheet.” The brief specified that the antagonist should be filmed in every scene. It did not specify where he would be standing. Crawford asked. He was told the camera operator would know.
What was shot over eleven nights was 32 minutes of Spider-Man footage in which the framing repeatedly and deliberately composed around empty space — doorways left in shot, corners held too long, a chair at the edge of frame that the continuity photographs confirm was occupied in some takes and not others, with no actor listed as occupying it. Crawford’s notebook: “we all knew where to point. none of us could say why. we did not discuss it.”
The pilot aired on a regional channel in the West of Scotland, February 20th 1987. Runtime: 32 minutes. Broadcast at 3:12am. The station’s overnight log records the transmission but attributes it to a production company that had been dissolved two months earlier.
Crawford kept a single continuity photograph from the shoot. It was examined in 2012. The chair in the frame is occupied. Everyone who has looked at the photograph describes the occupant differently.
Nobody describes a face.
