The game was older than the boy who played it.

In 1987, a production unit registered in Cairo under the name Ushabti Films — no prior credits, jointly financed by a Japanese cultural exchange fund and a private antiquities collector whose name appears in no public record — completed 30 minutes of 16mm footage split between a soundstage in Tokyo and an Egyptian desert location the production had no documented permit to access. The location coordinator’s notes state that access was granted by a man who “was already waiting when we arrived, and left before we finished, on foot, in a direction with nothing in it.”

The Yu-Gi-Oh pilot had no dialogue for the first eleven minutes. A boy assembling a golden object from pieces the props department confirmed they hadn’t supplied. The sound recordist logged a recurring detail: “there is a second voice under the lead actor’s dialogue. It speaks the same words a fraction of a second before he does. It is only in playback.”

It aired once on a UHF channel in Tokyo, September 26th 1987. Runtime: 30 minutes. A viewer wrote to the station describing the final scene — the boy looking into a mirror and seeing someone older looking back, and neither of them surprised.

Ushabti Films dissolved in December 1987. The golden prop was reported missing before the shoot ended.
