The thing standing behind him was never on the call sheet.
In 1987, a production unit registered in Sendai under the name Speedwagon Pictures — no prior credits, financed by a private foundation that listed its purpose as “the study of inherited phenomena across generations” — completed 32 minutes of 16mm footage across six nights in a decommissioned manor house outside Miyagi. The house had belonged to a single family since the Meiji era. The last resident died in 1981. Nobody on the crew could confirm who currently held the deed.
The JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure pilot opened on a young man standing alone in a hallway. No dialogue for the first ten minutes. The cinematographer’s notes record an anomaly that appeared on the second night and never resolved: “in every shot of the lead actor, there is a second figure standing directly behind him. it is not a crew member. it does not appear on set. it appears only on film.” The director’s production note dated September 9th 1987 reads: “we have decided not to remove it in post. we are not certain we could.”
It aired once on a UHF channel in Miyagi prefecture, October 19th 1987. Runtime: 32 minutes. The station log carries no title and no production credit. A technician on duty filed a report describing a sound during the broadcast he transcribed phonetically as a repeated two-syllable utterance with no meaning in any language he recognized.
Speedwagon Pictures dissolved in November 1987. The manor house outside Miyagi was demolished in 1990. The demolition crew reported the upper floor contained a room not present in any architectural plan.
The room was already empty. It had been waiting.
