The islands remembered something the mainland had forgotten.
In 1987, a production unit registered in Naha under the name Tapu Film — no prior credits, financed by a private cultural foundation whose stated purpose was “the preservation of pre-modern guardian traditions” — completed 30 minutes of 16mm footage across five nights on a stretch of Okinawa coastline that local maps marked as protected land with no public access. The production had no permit. The location agreement was made verbally with an elderly representative who, when the crew tried to thank him afterward, was not known to anyone in the nearest village.
The Pokemon Alola pilot opened on a child standing at the edge of the ocean at dawn. No dialogue for the first eleven minutes. The creature designs looked nothing like anything published — rounder, slower, older. The sound recordist’s log notes a recurring detail across all five nights: “there is a low tone in the location audio that is not the ocean and not wind. it is rhythmic. it does not match any equipment hum. it stops when we stop filming.” The director’s production note dated April 9th 1987 reads: “the children in the cast knew where to look before we told them. we have stopped giving them direction in those scenes.”
It aired once on a regional UHF channel in Okinawa, September 7th 1987. Runtime: 30 minutes. The station log lists the slot as a test transmission. No title. No production credit. Four viewers called the station that night. The log records all four calls with the same note: “viewer asked which island the footage was filmed on.”
Tapu Film dissolved in November 1987. The protected coastline was surveyed in 1990. The survey found four stone markers arranged at the corners of the filming location, each carved with a symbol the survey team could not attribute to any known Okinawan tradition.
The markers were not there in the 1985 survey.
