It was filmed as a nature survey. Nobody has ever classified the species.
In 1970, a field unit registered in Shizuoka under the name Kanto Shizen Kiroku — no prior credits, funded by a prefectural cultural grant that was never itemized — completed 38 minutes of 16mm footage across six weeks in upland villages scheduled for depopulation. The project was approved as a folk survey: traditional practices, seasonal rites, rural life before it ended. The approval paperwork lists one researcher by name. The footage shows at least four people working.
The documentary had no narration for the first nineteen minutes. Villagers walking treelines at dusk. Tall grass filmed from low angles. A woman setting a lacquered box on a stone and stepping back from it without explanation. The sound recordist’s field notes, dated May 1970, state: “the villagers refer to the animals by names that are not in any regional dialect record. They are reluctant to say them above a whisper. When I asked why, one man told me the names are how you are heard.”
The sequence that has never been fully explained runs eleven minutes near the end. A child in a clearing, wearing the skull of an animal over their head. Face not visible at any point. The child does not speak. The adults present do not look directly at them. The field notes for that day are a single line: “we were asked not to film this. we filmed it.”
It aired once on a regional channel in Shizuoka, November 11th 1970. Runtime: 38 minutes. The station log carries no title and no production credit. The prefectural grant office has no record of the project’s completion report ever being submitted.
The code translates, approximately, as “returned.”
