The transformation was never supposed to be shown. In 1986, a small independent production house in Hiroshima called Genshi Film completed sixteen minutes of 16mm footage built around a concept nobody had seen published yet. The financier was a private collector of rare minerals — obsessed, according to crew members, with the idea that stones could contain memory.

The pilot had no dialogue for the first nine minutes. A researcher in an underground laboratory. Shelves of catalogued stones. A light pulsing from inside one of them.

When the transformation happened, the crew stopped filming. The director of photography walked off set and never came back. In the production log recovered from a private auction in Osaka in 2017, on the date of March 14th 1986, the only entry reads: “we do not film this scene again.”

The pilot aired once on a cable channel in Hiroshima, a Friday evening in November. Runtime: 16 minutes. The following slot aired normally. As if nothing had preceded it.

Genshi Film dissolved in 1987.

The 16mm reels were declared lost during a studio relocation. No insurance claim was ever filed for the loss.

Someone knew they weren’t lost.
